Before treatment:

The patient had from car accident in August 2007, and afterwards fell into a coma. The patient had no movement or sensation in her four limbs. She was sent to a local hospital and was diagnosed with injury of T9 post trauma. Two days later, the patient received Plate fixation surgery and stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks. Both of the patient's upper limbs could move freely, but both lower limbs could not move. The patient started rehabilitation and made some progress through exercising. The patient knew when she felt the need to urinate and could urinate voluntarily. She could not control urination at night while sleeping. She needed Pampers for urination during the night. She was able to walk 10 to 20 minutes with the assistance of equipment and a walker. She started taking alprazolam Qn each night, and started taking sertraline 50 mg Qn in the morning. Before treatment, the patient's memory, calculation, comprehension and insight ability were normal. She had a normal ability to swallow. The sensation of both upper limbs was normal. The sensation of both lower limbs and movement ability of both lower limbs was completely lost. There was pan in bilateral hypochondria (the patient rechecked the Xratios, the results showed no abnormalities).

Nervous System Examination:

Libertad Rios was alert and she spoke fluently. Her memory, calculation and orientation abilities were all normal. Both pupils were equal in size and round, with a diameter of 3.0mms. Both eyeballs could move freely and the pupils reacted normally to light stimuli. The forehead wrinkle pattern was symmetrical. The tongue was centered in the oral cavity and the teeth were shown without deflection. The neck moved normally. She was able to shrug her shoulders without any problem. The muscle strength of both upper limbs was level 5, and the muscle tone of both upper limbs was normal. The muscle strength of both lower limbs was level 0, the muscle tone of both lower limbs was almost normal. There was an occasional spasm in both lower limbs. The tendon reflex of both upper limbs was normal. The tendon reflex of both lower limbs was active. The left side ankle clonus was positive. Bilateral abdominal reflexes were not obtained. The deep sensation below thoracic vertebra 8 was slowed down. The deep sensation and shallow sensation below thoracic vertebra 10 was gone completely. There was pain in the bilateral hypochondrium after sitting for a long time. The bilateral Hoffmann sign was negative, the bilateral palm jaw reflex was negative, and the sucking reflex was negative. The bilateral Babinski sign was positive. There were no signs of meningeal irritation. She was able to complete the finger-to-nose test and rapid rotation test normally. She was unable to complete the heel-knee-shin test.

Treatment:

We initially gave Libertad Rios a complete examination and the diagnosis was clear. Then she received treatment to nourish the neurons and improve blood circulation to increase the blood supply to the damaged neurons. She also received treatment to promote the regeneration of damaged nerves. This was accompanied by daily physical rehabilitation.

Post-treatment:

The patient's neurological function has improved. The plane of warm sensation and pain sensation has declined to Segment T11.  The pallesthesia plane declined to Segment T12. There is muscular contraction in the closest end of both lower limbs, and the muscle strength has reached level 1-2. In supine position, when bending both lower limbs and knees, the support is more stable. All of her toes flex on and off, involuntarily. She can sometimes control the activity of her left toes.
