Alhanashi-SCI-(Libya)

Name: Alhanashi

Sex: Male

Country: Libya

Age: 43

Diagnosis: Spinal cord injury

Days Admitted to the Hospital: 34

Alhanashi initially started to have weakness in both legs in December of 1998, but at that point, did not feel any pain. He did feel numbness and abnormal sensations, though. Alhanashi went to a local hospital and had an MRI of the spinal cord done which showed a space occupying lesion between the T1 and T2 segments. Soon after, Alhanashi had surgery to remove the lesion. At that time he was diagnosed with a neuroastrocytoma. After the operation, there was a loss of sensory motor skills. Three months later, the sensation and movement ability began to come back. Alhanashi was started on 9 months of rehabilitation training which was successful in restoring most of the sensory motor loss. Currently, there is some loss of sensation in the abdominal region. There is voluntary movement in both legs, but there is still considerable weakness. Alhanashi can walk with the help of crutches.

During the nervous system examination, Alhanashi was alert and his speech was clear. His memory, calculation abilities and orientation were normal. Both pupils were equal in size, the diameter was 3.0mm and reacted normally to light stimulus. His eyeballs could move flexibly. The forehead wrinkle pattern was symmetrical. The tongue was centered in the middle of the oral cavity and the teeth were shown without deflection.

Alhanashi could move his neck normally. The shrugging strength of the shoulders was strong. The muscle tension of both upper limbs was normal; the muscle strength was level 5. The muscle tension of both lower limbs was high; and the right lower limb was more severe than the left. The muscle strength of the left lower limb was level 2+; the right lower limb was level 2. The tendon reflexes of both upper limbs were normal; the patellar tendon was hyperflexive. The bilateral abdomen reflexes were normal. Alhanashi had feeling above the T6 segment, but the feeling was decreased below the T6 segment. The vibration sensation between the T3 and L3 segments was decreased and the vibration sensation disappeared below the L4 segment. The coordinated movement examination of both upper limbs showed normal results. Alhanashi was unable to cooperate with the coordinated movement examination of the lower limbs.

Before the treatment program, we gave Alhanashi a complete examination. Then we gave him the self stem cells activation treatment to repair the damage to the neurons. He received treatment to improve the blood circulation in order to increase the blood supply to the damaged neurons and nourish them. Alhanashi received physical rehabilitation training to promote the recovery of his motor functioning.

After the treatment was completed, the vibration sensation was decreased to the S2 segment. The muscle strength of both lower limbs had improved, the left lower limb's muscle strength is now level 3-, and the right lower limb's muscle strength is now level 2+. Alhanashi is now able to stand for 3 minutes without any support.

Alhanashi and his family members have returned to Libya. Considering the improvement that he got during and after the treatment, we have good reason to believe that there will be more improvements as time goes on. Everyone at our medical center wish Alhanashi all the best!
