Before treatment:
The child was born by caesarean section at 32 weeks of pregnancy. The birth weight was 1400g and there was no abnormal condition such as hypoxia. One month after birth he was found to have a white spot in the left eyeball and went to the local hospital. He was diagnosed at 2 months of age with retinopathy of prematurity, cataract. At present he has exophthalmos in his right eye, complete detachment of the retina, no sense of light, photophobia and has tears. The retina of the left eye is partially detached, there is some sense of light and there is an eye-closing reaction in strong light.
Admission PE:
Heart rate 120/min, body temperature: 36.2 degrees, height, 115cm; weight, 20kg. The patient had good nutrition and normal physical development. There were no yellow stains or bleeding spots of the skin or mucosa, no congestion of the throat and bilateral swelling of the tonsils. He had a symmetrical chest, clear respiratory sounds of both lungs, no dry or moist rales heard, strong heart sounds, regular heart rhythm, no obvious murmur heard in valves, flat and soft abdomen, no masses, a normal liver and spleen.
Nervous System Examination:
Patient was alert, had clear speech, normal memory, calculation and orientation abilities with normal intelligence. He had a sunken eyeball of the left eye, closing with strong light. There was a bulging eyeball of the right eye, cloudy cornea, dropping of right eyelid (half-closing), no pupil observed, no light perception. There was a 3mm pupil in the left eye, reactive to light and with light perception. Symmetrical forehead wrinkle and nasolabial fold, normal swallowing, normal hearing and free neck movement. He had free limbs movement, normal limbs muscle power, muscle tone and tendon reflexes. There was a normal abdominal reflex, negative sucking reflex and a negative palm-jaw reflex bilaterally. A negative Hoffmann, Rossolimo sign and Babinski sign bilaterally with normal deep and shallow sensation, normal coordination and a negative meningeal irritation sign.
Treatment:
After the admission he received 3 nerve regeneration treatments (neural stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells) to repair his damaged optic nerves and retinal cells, nourish nerves and cells, improve body environment, regulate his immune system and improve blood circulation. This was combined with rehabilitation training.
Post-treatment:
After 21 days treatment the left pupil got more sensitive to light and the left eye’s light perception got stronger. His left eye can now locate the light source. The right eye has light sense, photophobia (tearing from light) and the problems of the right eye got better. The bulging problem of his right eye was alleviated and the right eyelid got stronger than before. He can now open his right eye wider.One month later, the child was able to see moving objects. The family are very happy.
